The kernel does not have the driver to detect the HDD and thus
it is complaining that it cannot mount the root fs.
  
Did you select <*> for the IDE driver in menuconfig?
Additionally, select the IDE/SATA controller chipset as <*> in
menuconfig.  Also, suggest do 'make mrproper' prior to 'make
menuconfig.'

If you build a monolithic kernel then no need for initrd image.
