Practically speaking *dont* use Mint 5 if this is the case. Try using a 
distro whose Live CD works with your hardware *out of the box*. Try 
Lenny, Ubuntu, Fedora. From my experience Redhat / Redhat based distros 
generally have played better with graphics hardware. Worth a try. But 
its not worth debugging the problem with Linux Mint.
